Fisher Price digital cameraThis is our first digital camera review on StartPhoto, and given how much fun we think photography is, it seems somehow fitting that it’s for a toy Fisher Price digital camera (called the Fisher Price Kid Tough digital camera). Don’t get us wrong, we are serious as you are about quality image making… the author shoots with a Canon 5D (when he shoots digital) and a 4×5 camera with a razor-sharp lens (and TMAX) when he shoots analog.

But what when you’re looking for a digital camera for kids?

Our answer: the Fisher Price Kid Tough Digital Camera.

My son just turned 4, and to start him off right, I wanted to give him a ‘real’ camera, as opposed to something like a broken 110 camera that he can only pretend with. This Fisher Price Kidtronics digital camera gave him the ability to actually see the results of his ‘photography’ and have the feeling of accomplishment when his images are printed out and hung in the hallway photo gallery. It was pretty neat to share my interest with him as well - now he’s a photographer, just like Dad.

Fisher Price Digital Camera: Care and Use
Needless to say, this digital camera is totally easy to use. We had the camera out and he was shooting in the space of 2 minutes. The camera features large hand grips on each side, and so far it’s proven tough enough to stand up to a 4-year-old’s abuse.

Image quality?
Well, not so much. But considering the audience, he was more than satisfied. We’ve made 4×6″ prints, and yes, there is noticeable grain and visual noise, even at this size print. Most parents won’t complain, however, and we figure that probably most of these images will be viewed on screen anyway (isn’t this true of the majority of your digital camera images, too?)

Features of the Kid Tough Digital Camera:

  • 1.6″ LCD screen
He can preview the images he took instantly, just like a real digital camera
  • Built in memory or option to add an additional memory card
We haven’t added a card… when he fills up the internal memory, we dump it via a USB cord into the family computer. One note about this: the included software seems to like the PC better than the Mac - even after checking for updates, it does crash occasionally on my Powerbook.
  • Easy-to-use controls
The camera features two-eye viewing and big controls, so it was easy for him to start shooting immediately. He has trouble closing one eye with a normal camera, so this turned out to be a real benefit.

Overall:
The Fisher Price digital camera is perfect for any kid ages 3-10. Older kids will probably be ready for more features, like a zoom function, but for our 4-year-old, the camera is great. Considering that he destroys nearly everything he touches, the durability is remarkable. I’m glad to share my passion with him, and who knows, maybe this will foster a lifelong love of photography!
